The scenario

Every Monday staff in Philips' Lighting receive nine Excel reports from different European countries which need to be collated, analysed and report upon. This was time-consuming, stressful and prone to potential errors. It took all day every Monday to complete the task.

They requested that this was automated using Excel macros - Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

“You are an absolute delight to work with and if you ever need a reference, please do feel free to use me.  I have really enjoyed it and I can’t tell you what a difference this will have made. I know you might not get this til next week, but I wanted you to have it in writing."

Emma Jukes, Operations and Supply Chain Improvement Manager, Philips Lighting

The Solution

Thankfully Philips Lighting had documented the procedure used each Monday to complete this task, so “all” we had to do was reproduce these instructions programmatically. Of course that’s always easier said than done, but with lots of hard work from us and the Philips staff we achieved the result they wanted by producing several macros.

This collating, analysis and reporting now takes approximately 10 minutes (rather than all day). By producing these we have saved them 48 working days per annum - or over two working months each year!
